Backstory

[CW: death, homelessness, abandonment, kidnapping, torture, coma, PTSD symptoms, disability, relationship issues, suicidal thoughts]

Crian was orphaned at a young age; he was around 7 years old when his parents went out one day and never returned. He lived on his own in the alleyways of [Castle Town] for several months before being discovered by Pi and Dregg. The young couple took him in, the act pushing them to commit to their own relationship.

Of course the couple was going through their own growing pains at the time. Dregg was in and out for the following year or so, struggling to control the dangerous combination of his "Rages" and his recently acquired lycanthropy. The constant turmoil didn't do any favors for Crian's fear of abandonment, and for the longest time he referred to Dregg only by name, while he'd taken to calling Pi "mom".

A few years later, when Ryo, a family friend, discovered that Crian had magical abilities, he took him under his wing to teach him how to control it. The boy had a lot of natural potential, and was able to control most elemental magic, and was particularly comfortable with fire. Crian had been keeping it a secret, knowing his adopted [Gerudo] mother had an open disdain for magic. He continued to keep it secret until his late teens, when an incident forced him to use his magic in defense of his family and friends.

It wasn't long after that he and his childhood friend Maya were attacked by a woman by the name of Aya--a [Ganondorf] sympathizer that was determined to use magic to resurrect [Dark Link]. She captured both, first torturing Crian to try and force him to agree to complete the spell for her. It wasn't until she threatened Maya that Crian gave in to the demand. [Dark Link] was brought back using the spell, before the pair was rescued by Ryo and their parents.

Driven by a desperate need to make things right, Crian went back to perform a counter-spell and banish the shadow again. He was successful, but the extent of the overuse left him in a coma for over a month, and he woke up without his eyesight.

A long recovery followed; he slowly learned how to get around without his eyesight, but he struggled with fear, nightmares, and a persistent and dangerous "magic block" that went on for over half a year before he finally confessed to Pi what was going on. She took him to Ryo's school by the lake to seek help. Ryo set Crian up in a special isolation room in the basement of the school, to protect the other occupants in case the worst happened, and to help keep the boy calm while they worked to help him through the block.

It took some time, but one morning Crian found he could 'see' faint outlines of people and objects around him--like wavering smokey outlines. It was a promising sign that he was finally starting to work past the magic block and truly recover from that harrowing experience.

Crian went on to become a teacher at the [Kakariko] magic school. He and Maya's friendship had bloomed into something a little bit more in all but words, which made it all the more devastating when her magically gifted brother Saxon was killed in what appeared to be a terrible accident at Crian's school. Unable to handle the guilt, Crian left [Hyrule], pointedly leaving his dearest possessions behind (a scarf from Maya, and a family heirloom from Ryo).

He struggled with suicidal thoughts and lived in squalor in the cold, miserable town he ended up in. Eventually he was found and taken in by a young woman, Cecelia, that fell hard for him; she doggedly ignored the signs that her feelings were unrequited, convinced he would grow to share her feelings as he recovered from whatever he'd come from.

Then one night, Saxon--Maya's little brother whom he'd thought had been killed--reached out to him through a telepathic link, to tell him to come back and that he was okay.

Crian rejected the message at first, convinced it was a cruel prank. But eventually he reached out to Ryo telepathically, breaking his isolation with everyone at home out of a need to know if it was true.

Upon learning the truth, and Saxon's insistence that he come back, Crian did ultimately return to [Hyrule], accompanied by the woman who'd taken him in off the streets. He returned to find his non-consensual rival, Chandler, dating Maya and running the school in his stead. The next few weeks were explosive, but ultimately Crian realized he loved Maya and finally fully rebuked Cecelia's advances, knowing he could never be what she wanted. At the same time, Chandler and Maya also split, both recognizing on some level that Maya's heart was elsewhere.

Ultimately, Maya and Crian ended up together. Crian's eyesight was mysteriously restored (possibly by his now-corrupt brother Juno as part of a larger scheme) but it deteriorated some after the war ended and Juno had been sealed for good.

Maya and Crian married just before the final war against Juno, and had two children, Lana and Rory, as they settled into life post-Flood. Crian became something of an elected Mayor for the new settlement.
